Def Lifespan approach/terminology/psychological theories/Upton: the understanding of a person’s development through life from birth to death.
Upton I 2
Def innate/Upton: “innate” refers to characteristics believed to exist at birth due to genetic factors; something that is instinctive, not learned.
Def tabula rasa/Upton: from the Latin meaning “blank slate”. This is the phrase that John Locke used to refer to a child’s mind at birth, which he believed was unformed and featureless.
Def maturation/Upton: the biological process that underpins growth and development; the genetic instructions facilitating the development of instinctive behavioral patterns when a certain growth point or time period has been reached.
Def nativism/language development: the nativist position argues that the environmental input from language is insufficient for infants and children to acquire the structure of language. Proponent: Noam Chomsky.
Language acquisition device/LAD/Chomsky/Upton: thesis: there is a “universal grammar” that applies to all human languages and is pre-spcified (Chomsky, 1979)(1); Pinker, 2007(2)).
